7 years after crash in Lisa: BELLVIEW WAS BOMBED–Red Cross Chief
By FELIX ASIMOLE
Seven years after the crash of Bellview Boeing 737 flight 210 plane at Lisa, Ogun State, in which 117 persons died, it has been revealed that the aircraft was bombed. The Abuja-bound aircraft that took off from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, on October 22, 2005, crashed few minutes after it was airborne. A top official of the Red Cross, Professor Charles Ohiku, made the startling revelation in an exclusive interview with Sunday Sun in Lagos. Prof Ohiku, who led the Red Cross rescue team at the crash scene, said that unlike the recent Dana plane crash, no human skull was found at the scene of the Bellview crash because it was blown up.
“I headed the rescue team at the Bellview plane crash site at Lisa, Ogun State. That plane was blown. That is why the probe report can never come out till tomorrow. “That plane didn’t just drop from the sky. By the time we got there the following morning, we could not find even one human head. “You know, at the Dana plane crash site some incomplete human bodies and heads were recovered from the crash site. But in the case of Bellview crash there was no single head or a skull. Quote me. “I was there as a representative of the Nigerian Red Cross, and I can tell you categorically that no single skull was seen or picked up in a crash of that magnitude and the number of passengers involved.
“How can anyone explain the fact that with 117 passengers and crew members in the plane no single head or skull was found during rescue operation, even though there was no survivor?” Asked why anyone would bomb the plane at that time when there was no Boko Haram or any other serious security threat to the country, Prof Ohiku said some people might have felt that somebody in that plane, who was considered too close to the President at that time, was being groomed to take over from him. He recalled that Dr Iyabo Obasanjo, who was then Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, gave his team a note to the General Hospital and, “then we packed them (mangled bodies) in a case, the one they use in packing corpses.”

The 1 minute 52 seconds audio, released by Channels Television contained a conversation believed to have transpired between both men before the submission of the subsidy report on the floor of the House of Representatives. The audio, indicates that the person supposed to be Lawan is telling the other of the need to keep their discussions secret, as any leak could cause untold embarrassment. The voice alleged to be Farouk Lawan’s took pains to explain his plan of action to doctor the report in Otedola’s favour.

"Oshiomole lied about assasination attempt, Here's what happened" - Police
By SIMON EBEGBULEMJ, Benin
THE Edo State Police Command said yesterday that it has commenced investigation into the attack on the convoy of Governor Adams Oshiomhole Thursday night and the burning of the Police post by youths alleged to be students of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Usen.
However, the State Government in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Louis Odion, alleged thugs loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state opened fire on the Governor’s convoy at about 6pm, shortly after he paid a visit to the Onogie of Usen, His Royal Highness Oluogbe 11,at his palace.
It stated however that “the brave security details attached to the governor, supported by an additional contingent of regular policemen deployed to maintain law and order, rose to the occasion. They were able to shield the governor, key government functionaries and ACN leaders. But several official vehicles including Toyota Land cruisers, Hilux pick up van and Toyota Corrola Saloon car were either badly damaged or riddled with bullet”.
The attack is coming barely two months after the Governor escaped death following the accident involving his convoy at Auchi, where three journalists in his convoy lost their lives.
However, the Police Command in a statement signed by its spokesman in the state, DSP Anthony Airhuoyo, narrated that “the governor went on campaign tour to Usen town in Ovia South West Council of Edo state, the governor while on his way to the campaign venue met the students and promised to address them on his way back.

Mr Fashola who spoke in an interview with State House Correspondents at Lagos House, Ikeja said that it is a process which has taken place before and when it took place the people went through it and it was managed successfully even though there were some traffic.
“Let us remember that we have done this before. Two years ago four joints were fixed and I think we managed the traffic by communicating with our people. So, contrary to what has been reported, it is not a total closure but a partial closure.

Goodluck Jonathan is a joke – Professor George @ayittey
One of the World’s foremost economists, Professor George Ayittey has lashed out at the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ), describing him as “a joke” and a mediocre President after his (GEJ’s) encounter with the media last night.
According to Professor Ayittey, Nigeria “deserves a better leader”, judging by GEJ’s poor, almost unfortunate responses to some of the questions posed to him by the Nigerian media last night.
The Professor indicated that GEJ’s refusal to declare his assets and his failure to tackle the Boko Haram crisis suggests that he is of an unsound mind.
He therefore called on Nigerians to rid themselves of GEJ as soon as possible.
He said: “Nigerians should not put up with such mediocrity and should mount a RECALL GEJ campaign. They should check Chapter VI of their Constitution. See Sections 143 and 144 about removing the President and Vice-President from office other than through elections”.
“137; 1c: “A person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if under the law in any part of Nigeria, he is adjudged to be a lunatic or otherwise declared to be of unsound mind.”

Court says Sanusi has no right to grant Islamic Banking Licences
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri, Abuja
A Federal High Court in Abuja, yesterday, held that the Central Bank, CBN, Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, lacked the constitutional powers to issue license for the operation of a non interest bank under the Islamic commercial jurisprudence.
Delivering judgment in a suit that was filed by a lawyer, Mr Godwin Sunday, challenging the institutionalization of the Islamic banking system in the country by Sanusi, the court maintained that the action was in flagrant violation of section 10 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
The court preisded over by Justice Gabriel Kolawole noted that in-line with the extant provisions of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act, BOFIA, Cap B2, Laws of Nigeria, 2004, the CBN governor, ought to have secured the nod of both the National Assembly and the Minister of Finance, before issuing license and guidelines for the operation of Islamic Bank in the country.
It however declined to revoke the license earlier issued to one Jaiz Bank International Plc to operate Islamic banking in the country on the premise that the plaintiff lacked the locus-standi to institute the action.

Farouk Lawan
By SaharaReporters, New York
The plenary session of the Nigerian House of Representative has suspended Farouk Lawan from the house and referred his case to the Ethics Committee of the house. Farouk Lawan is a People’s Democratic Party member and the house ad-hoc committte chairman of oil subsidy probe who was accused of receiving $620,000 in bribes from a shady oil business magnate, Femi Otedola.
When the emergency meeting began today, federal legislators overwhelmingly passed a "vote of confidence" on the speaker of the house.
Mr. Farouk was detained overnight by the police over allegations that he engaged in bribery to remove Mr. Otedola's company, Zenon Oil and Gas Limited from the list of oil marketers involved in fraudulent gasoline imports that led to the theft of $6.7 billion.
The lawmakers at today's emergency meeting adopted a resolution to reenlist Mr. Otedola's Zenon Oil and Gas Ltd and Synopsis Enterprise Ltd on the list of companies that were corruptly enriched through fraudulent subsidy payments.

LAGOS — Chairman of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on fuel subsidy management, Hon. Farouk Lawan who is at the centre of the $3million bribe to clear indicted oil companies, was detained last night by the police.
Rep Lawan who voluntarily reported to the CP Ali Amodu-led police Special Task Force investigating the allegation at about 4.40pm yesterday was interrogated for several hours alongside the secretary of the ad-hoc committee, Boniface Emenalo. As at press time, his interrogators said the embattled lawmaker has failed to return the marked $620, 000 first installment he collected and he would not be allowed to go until he hands over the money.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives reconvenes in an extra-ordinary session this morning with the legislators weighing several options to diminish the damages accruing from the cash for clearance scam centred around Rep. Farouk Lawan.
The dimension of the crisis escalated, yesterday, with the Police claiming that as much as N11.3 billion might have been collected as bribe money by Rep. Lawan and some unnamed members of the ad-hoc committee on the investigation of fuel subsidy management.
Interested parties including former influential members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday night intervened during separate meetings with Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and Rep. Lawan over the brewing crisis at the Apo Legislative Quarters residence of Chief Halims Agoda.

"How I was kidnapped and how I escaped" - Christian Obodo
What the footballer told Kickoff magazine
“I couldn’t believe it. I was on my way to church and I had just parked my car when six boys, very young boys, just came to me and started ordering me to come with them.
“I told them to take it easy, that I would do what they say, and they took me to their car, blindfolded me and drove away. I asked where we were going, and they said Port Harcourt, then Benin, then Asaba. Instead, when they took off the blindfold, we were in a forest. That night, I slept on the ground.

The full details of the $3 million bribery scandal involving members of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on the Fuel Subsidy probe were revealed yesterday, as one of the major actors in the scandal has opened up on what transpired.
In an exclusive interview with THISDAY, chairman, Zenon Petroleum & Gas Ltd, Mr. Femi Otedola, who hitherto was suspected of being behind the $3 million bribery scandal, blew the lid on what transpired and how chairman of the ad-hoc committee, Hon. Farouk Lawan, and the secretary of the committee, Mr. Boniface Emenalo, had collected $620,000 from him in a sting operation masterminded by the security agencies.
The amount was part payment for the $3 million, which he alleged Lawan had demanded from him to exonerate Zenon Oil from the ad-hoc committee’s report.
As the scandal unfolds, it was learnt that operatives of the State Security Services have sent a video recording of the incident to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further scrutiny and action.
Otedola, who was opening up on the issue for the first time, narrated how Lawan at the outset of the probe had approached him to get some insight into the workings of the downstream oil and gas sector.
Otedola said he obliged him and ensured that his managing directors of Forte Oil Plc and Zenon Oil appeared at the subsidy probe during its public hearing after both companies had been invited by the committee.

ABUJA-
There are indications that fresh trouble is brewing at the House of Representatives over allegations that Chairman of the House’s Adhoc Committee on Petroleum Subsidy Hon. Farouk Lawan was involved in a bribery scandal worth $600,000 last month.
Already there are speculations that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may have invited Hon Lawan over the bribery allegation which sources say have already resulted in the Speaker of the House Hon. Aminu Tambuwal disowning the legislator over the messy incident.
It was gathered that Tambuwal had confronted Lawan over the issue in a meeting of Principal officers of the House where the Chairman of the Adhoc Committee on Petroleum Subsidy was summoned to defend himself over the allegation.

DANA AIR CRASH: Aviation ministry, NCAA disagree over suspension of airline's operating license
While the aviation ministry says DANA's license has been suspended indefinitely, industry regulator, NCAA, says the license remains valid
The management of Dana Air on Wednesday denied the suspension of their operational licence in Nigeria in the wake of last Sunday's air disaster which claimed the lives of more than 150 people, a claim that was swiftly punctured by the aviation ministry.
At a world press conference in Lagos, Wednesday, Francis Ogboro, a director in the company told journalists that only the aircrafts similar to the crashed one were grounded.
"I use this opportunity to tell the world that our licence has not been suspended," said Mr. Ogboro.
Arik aircraft makes u-turn to Port-Harcourt as Abuja airport runway lights refuse to come on...
The minister of Aviation Princess Stella Oduah did say, in the wake of the Dana Crash that our airways were the safest around. I am certain she didn’t mean that in the literal sense. She deserves a sack if she does because it all looks like some constant attempt to either scare Nigerians from flying or just plain absolute incompetence. This is just not the way to run an industry let alone a safety or death one like aviation!

FULL SPEECH OF THE PRESIDENT's DEMOCRACY DAY ADDRESS
NATIONAL ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR, ON DEMOCRACY DAY, MAY 29, 2012
Fellow Nigerians,
1. One year ago, I was privileged to stand before you, to take the oath of office as President of our dear country, the third to serve you as President since the return to democratic rule in 1999. Today, I remember that day and the processes leading to it with profound gratitude to God Almighty and to all Nigerians who have worked very hard to enrich our journey from military dictatorship to inclusive democratic governance.
2. For the past 13 years, we have remained a stable democracy. We have together demonstrated that the government of the people is an ideal that the people of Nigeria cherish. We have our differences as individuals and as politicians, but we have shown great faith in democracy and its institutions. We have refused to be limited by our differences. Despite reservations about some of our institutions, we have refused to submit to despair. This achievement is a testament to the courage and optimism of the Nigerian people.
3. As we celebrate this year’s Democracy Day, I pay tribute to all the men and women who have made our democratic experience meaningful: the ordinary people who resisted military rule, and have remained resolute in their embrace of democracy; the army of Nigerian voters who, at every election season, troop out in large numbers to exercise their right of franchise; the change agents in civil society who have remained ever watchful and vigilant.

With this development, regular courts (where more than 55 cases are stalled) will no longer try corruption-related matters.
Also, the commission is seeking compulsory and free education from primary school to Junior Secondary School for all school-age children in the country.
But the full list of agencies recommended for abolition also emerged yesterday in Abuja .

Make Bunkering Legal; Former Bayelsa State Governor Diepreye Alamieyesigha
Alamieyeseigha said foreigners are the masterminds of bunkering in the region.
He urged stakeholders to prevail on President Goodluck Jonathan to issue licences for the legalisation of bunkering.
The former governor spoke at a ceremony in honour of the late Ijaw hero, Isaac Boro, in Yenagoa.
He said: “There is one thing happening in our area now. I read in the papers about oil theft. About 17 per cent of our production is taken away.
“Our people are not sophisticated enough to go into high-level bunkering. The bunkerers are not here. In the whole oil industry, how many Ijaw people are lifting oil?
“To address the poverty that is so endemic among our people, there should be licences for bunkering.
“The Ijaw man is not yet emancipated economically. The fight is not over, we must be economically liberated.
“There is a thin line between economy and power. They complement each other. My brothers and sisters, let us unite. We should obtain licences for bunkering.
“We have a president of our own, we have a minister of petroleum, who will stop us from obtaining bunkering licences?
“Ask, it shall be given, knock it shall be open. No need to go behind the door. Let us confront our brother and get what we want for our people.”
Alamieyeseigha extolled the legacies of the late Boro, whom he described as the architect of the survival of the Ijaw nation.
“People must look at those areas that we have been impoverished and fight for it. We know that nobody will give you power on a platter of gold; you demand for it, you fight for it. It is our own,” he noted.
Facebook shares keep going down...
Shares in Facebook have dropped again as investors continue to shun what was one of the most-anticipated flotations.
In mid-morning trading the shares were about 2.3% down at $33.27 each, having fallen 5.2% at the open.
Facebook debuted on the Nasdaq stock exchange on Friday at $38 a share in the world's third-biggest flotation.
But the shares fell 11% on Monday, and the continuing lacklustre performance has intensified debate over whether Facebook was over-valued.
It is a remarkable turnaround from recent weeks, when the social network's share sale was over-subscribed and the eight-year-old firm was valued at $104bn (£66bn).

EXPLOSIONS IN PORT HARCOUT WASN'T BOKO HARAM; AMAECHI EXPLAINS
The explosion in Port Harcourt this morning was neither a bomb nor Boko Haram. The Rivers State governor say the explosion was caused by armed robbers who were on their way to rob, with guns and dynamites in their bus. They were smoking in the bus as they were going to rob, and as God would have it, fire from the cigarettes triggered the dynamite in their bus to explode, killing only the driver. The three other robbers in the bus survived and were immediately arrested by police.

Court stops Lagos from restricting okada riders; orders return of seized Motorcycles
A Federal High Court sitting in Ikeja has stopped the Lagos State Government from enforcing its plan to ban or restrict the operations of commercial motorcyclists. Justice Steven Adah gave the order on Friday while delivering judgmentin a suit filed by the motorcycle operators, popularly called” Okada riders”, against the government.
The motorcycle operators, under the umbrella of four associations, filed the suit on Feb. 8, through their counsel, Mr Bamidele Aturu.
Mr Ade Ipaye, Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, was joined in the suit as second respondent.
The applicants had asked the court for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from hindering commercial motorcycle operations or arresting their members for using commercial motorcycles.
In his judgment, Adah held that it was unconstitutional and illegal for the government to ban or restrict the operations of the commercial motorcyclists because there was no written law to that effect.
” The Lagos State House of Assembly has not enacted any law banning or restricting the operations of commercial motorcyclists. For the ban to have any effect, the state government should go to the legislature. The government cannot be dictatorial by resorting to an arbitrary imposition of restrictions on the operations of commercial motorcyclists,” the judge said.

The Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati Wal-Jihad, popularly known as Boko Haram, says it attacked THISDAY Thursday to send a strong message to the media that it would no longer condone reports misrepresenting it in the press, or blaming it for acts it knows nothing about.
Abul Qaqa, spokesperson for the sect told Premium Times, in an exclusive interview, that his organisation was fed up with the deliberate misinformation being peddled about it in the Nigerian and foreign media.
“We have repeatedly cautioned reporters and media houses to be professional and objective in their reports. This is a war between us and the Government of Nigeria; unfortunately the media have not been objective and fair in their report of the ongoing war, they chose to take side,” Mr. Qaqa said.
He identified three instances where he claimed his group was deliberately misrepresented by the media. The first, according to him, was the rumour of his capture by the Nigerian intelligence agencies.
How THISDAY’s Kaduna Office 'Suicide Bomber' Was Arrested
The suspected Boko Haram member who drove a bomb-laden car into the Kaduna office of Thisday today was arrested by vigilant bystanders, before he could flee the scene.
P.M.NEWS gathered that after the suspected bomber parked a Honda Civic car in the newspaper’s compound located at Ahmadu Bello Way, Kaduna, he quickly came out of the car and tried to get away from the area. But some youths ran after him and asked him why he left his car there when he does not have an office in the building.
P.M.NEWS gathered that as they were beating him and dragging him towards the main road, he kept warning them that the car would explode. Suddenly the car exploded, killing 3 persons in its vicinity.

D'BANJ: Don Jazzy Betrayed Me... Here's How...
Do you want to hear from D’banj on the Mo’Hits Split? We have heard from Don Jazzy. Read this and you will be touched. To be honest, am tired of the split already. But reading this, I am confused; I don’t know who to believe. You all must read it. And that is why am bringing it to you courtesy of thenetng.com. It was an exclusive interview with D’banj in London. Please click to read….
‘There’s an important person in that building, right?’ the cab driver asked. ‘Important musician?’
I nodded, too tired to let any curious driver drag me into a conversation.
He got the message and left me alone the entire drive from Canary Wharf to the London Marriot Hotel, in Grosvenor Square.
Then, as I got down to get my suitcase from the trunk, he gave me a knowing look, smiled, and said ‘are you the musician?’
‘Of course not’, I said to him, smiling this time. ‘The musician is in Canary Wharf, his name is D’banj’.
Silence. Confused look.
‘D’banj?’
Yes, D’banj. He’s big in Africa. You know ‘Oliver Twist?’
Silence again, then as his final ‘no’ came, I said ‘Google him.’
It was 4am on Saturday, April 21. I arrived in London eight hours earlier, and had spent almost all of that time chatting withD’banj, in his first interview with a Nigerian newspaper in a long time, and his first interview on the Mo’Hits brouhaha.

PENSION FUND DRAMA: EFCC INVESTIGATES BANKERS, N35 million TRACED TO CORPS MEMBER’S ACCOUNT
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is to go after bank officials involved in the mismanagement of pension funds.
SATURDAY PUNCH investigations showed that the Chairman of the commission, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, has taken steps to ensure the effective prosecution of the officials of the various banks in Abuja, who aided the plundering of the pension money.
A source, who confided in our correspondent on Friday, said the agency was alarmed at the complicity of the bankers in the pension scam and had adopted measures to ensure their prosecution.
The source said that while it would be difficult for the commission to prosecute banks, it had decided that all bankers and accounts officers found to have collaborated with the 40 accused persons facing trial for looting the pension funds would be made to face the full weight of the law.
It was learnt that a team of investigators led by Mohammed Wakili, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, had discovered several bankers, who exploited their positions to aid the principal suspects to move huge amounts of money.
