IBB, Atiku, Gusau, Saraki Accused Jonathan of Intimidation; Ask For Investigation of Henry Okah Claims on Bomb Blasts

The presidential campaign organizations of Generals Ibrahim Babangida, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, General Aliyu Gusau and Governor Abubakar Bukola Saraki have accused President Goodluck Jonathan administration of unleashing “a culture of intimidation, harassment and fear against leading political opponent as a means of silencing their voices and ensuring its success in the 2011 President elections”, in its response to the October 1 bomb blasts in Abuja.

IBB

In a joint statement signed by Senator Kanti Bello, Deputy Director General, General Ibrahim Babangida Campaign Organisation, Senator Ben Obi, Director General of General Aliyu Gusau Campaign Organisation, Dr Udenta. O Udenta, Director General of Dr Abubakar Saraki Campaign Organisation and Chris Mammah, the Director General of Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation titled We Will Not Be Deterred by The Politics of Impunity, Silence, Fear, Intimidation and Harassment this evening, the four Northern presidential candidates also said a “more dangerous dimension is being introduced to the unfolding bomb blast phenomenon”. The campaign organizations also accused President Jonathan of giving the “green light to the security agents to hunt down his perceived political opponents and rope them into the planning and execution of the bomb blasts” though MEND had claimed responsibility for unfortunate event.

The Northern presidential aspirants also called for an independent judicial investigation into claims by Henry Okah over the Independence Day bomb blasts on Tuesday afternoon on the Al-Jazeera television network.

The four presidential aspirants were reacting to the arrest of the Director General of General Babangida Campaign Organisation, Chief Raymond Dokpesi yesterday by the State Security Services, SSS and the claims by Henry Okah, the leader of Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND on Al-Jazeera that he is being persecuted because of his refusal to implicate Northern presidential aspirants in the independence day bomb blasts.

While accusing the Jonathan administration of playing politics with the security of the country in the way it had so far reacted to the bomb blasts, the Northern presidential aspirants condemned yesterday’s arrest of Dokpesi and his linkage to the Independence Day deadly explosions.

“ This latest attempt to demonize Dr Dokpesi and cast him in the mould of terrorist is but a small part of an escalating culture of impunity, recklessness, intolerance and arbitrariness which the Federal Government is currently associated with”, said the Northern presidential aspirant.

The Presidential aspirants also called for the investigations of the claims by Henry Okah that he was contacted by one of the aides to President Jonathan to publicly absolve MEND of responsibility for the bomb blasts and instead claimed that it was the handiwork of some Northern presidential aspirants.

This Okah said in the television interview was with a view to portraying the Nothern presidential aspirants in a bad light and enhancing the chances of President Goodluck Jonathan to win the 2011 polls. Okah leader said it was in expectation of the statement that President Jonathan went to town with statements absolving MEND od culpability in the bomb blasts. “The Northern presidential aspirants said the allegations by Okah deserved to be investigated. Henry Okah accusations are weighty and sobering and if true, must require an independent judicial investigation”, the aspirants added in the statement.

Okah: Nigerian President wanted me to absolve MEND in Bomb blast attacks...

The former leader of Nigeria’s armed group has said he was arrested because he refused to tell the group to retract a statement claiming responsibility for last week’s deadly attacks in the capital, Abuja.

Henry Okah

Henry Okah, currently being held in jail in South Africa, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that he received a phone call from a “close associate” of Goodluck Jonathan, the Nigerian president, telling him to urge the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend) to withdraw its claim for the bombings, which killed at least 10 people and left 36 others injured on the 50th anniversay of Nigeria’s independence.

“On Saturday morning, just a day after the attack, a very close associate of President Jonathan called me and explained to me that there had been a bombing in Nigeria and that President Jonathan wanted me to reach out to the group, Mend, and get them to retract the earlier statement they had issued claiming the attacks,” Okah said.

He added: “They wanted to blame the attacks on northerners who are trying to fight against him [Jonathan] to come back as president and if this was done, I was not going to have any problems with the South African government.

“I declined to do this and a few hours later I was arrested. It was based on their belief that I was going to do that that Jonathan issued a statement saying that Mend did not carry out the attack.”

ABUJA, Oct 04, (THEWILL) - Nine persons have today been arrested by the State Security Service (SSS), over last Friday’s Abuja dual bombings where scores of persons died and many were left wounded. The Police said the aim of the bombers was to disrupt the golden jubilee celebration as Nigeria clocked 50.

In a press conference in Abuja, SSS image maker, Mrs. Marilyn Ogar revealed how an attempted blast was prevented at the Three Arms Zone in Abuja, where six vehicles were positioned for the operation on September 28, 2010.

She explained that SSS immediately swung into action with both the police and the military, by evacuating nine (9) vehicles that were abandoned within the three arms zone thereby hindering the first attempted blast designed for September 29.

"The despicable act of terrorism which eventually took place on October 1st, 2010 was planned for Wednesday, September 29, 2010, but was foiled as soon as the information was received during the early hours of 28th September, 2010. The overriding objective of the group was to scare foreign visitors from attending the 50th celebration on 1st of October," Ogar said.

"On Tuesday, 28th September, 2010 about 0130 hours, information was received that the 3 arms zone was to be bombed and 6 vehicles had already being prepared for the purpose but the Service contacted the military which provided 3 towing trucks which were added to that of the Service to evacuate the abandoned vehicles.

"During the operations that lasted from 0215 to 0630 of the same date, a total of 9 abandoned vehicles were towed away and of these, 2 were near the SSS headquarters, 2 facing the Villa gate and the National Assembly, 2 close to the police headquarters, 1 at the Eagle Square and 2 around Apo Legislative quarters.

"Later the Federal Road Safety Corp, FRSC and the Vehicle Inspection Office, VIO, were co-opted into the operations, to move around the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, towing away abandoned vehicles. These efforts which lasted till the morning of October 1, saw 65 abandoned vehicles removed, it is worthy of note that out of the 7 vehicles removed from the Three Arms Zone, 4 are yet to be collected.

"When the plan A of the group was foiled, they resorted to the penetration of the Eagle Square in an attempt to plant explosive devices but the Service had deployed hi-tech equipment in and around the Eagle Square and jammed the detonation of any such explosives," she emphasized.

She further stressed that; "On October 1, the Eagle Square and its environs were cordoned off and appropriate measures were put in place by the joint efforts of all security and law enforcement agencies to prevent any untoward incident but the rain showers of that morning provided the leeway for double parking by motorists and in the process the perpetrators apparently gained access to park on the road side as well.

"So far, 9 arrests have been made and all have direct links with Henry Okah, the incident and some unscrupulous prominent elements in the society but due to on-going investigations, the names of the suspects and their sponsors cannot be disclosed at this stage," she said.

"As far as I am concerned the security measures were effective, imagine a situation whereby the bombs were planted at the Eagle Square what would have happened to that large crowd at the venue.

"Meanwhile, from all indications there is a security alert in the capital city, as major roads leading to the 3 arms zone are guarded by heavily armed security agents," the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, South African prosecutors according to a Reuters report brought terrorism charges against Nigerian militant leader Henry Okah on Monday for deadly bomb blasts in the Nigerian capital. Prosecutors at a court in Johannesburg charged Okah, who lives in South Africa, with conspiracy to commit a terrorist act and the detonation of explosive devices in Abuja. His lawyer denied his involvement.

"The accused is linked to the bombing that took place in Abuja," said Hein Louw, the magistrate overseeing the court proceeding.

Foreign-based group behind Nigeria bombs: President

ABUJA | Sun Oct 3, 2010 6:04pm EDT

(Reuters) - A small terrorist group based outside Nigeria and not militants from the oil-producing Niger Delta carried out last week's car bomb attacks in the capital Abuja, President Goodluck Jonathan said on Sunday.

Two car bombs exploded near a parade marking Nigeria's 50th anniversary of independence on Friday, killing at least 10 people and injuring 36, according to the police.

The attacks were claimed by Nigeria's main militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).

A MEND statement signed Jomo Gbomo -- the pseudonym used by the group to claim previous attacks on Nigeria's oil industry -- was emailed to media warning the area should be evacuated an hour before the Abuja bombs went off.

But Jonathan said investigations had revealed MEND members knew nothing about the attacks and they had been carried out by a small group based outside Nigeria, sponsored by "unpatriotic elements within the country."

"It is a small terrorist group that resides outside Nigeria that was paid by some people within to perpetrate the dastardly act," Jonathan said, according to a statement from his office.

"We are on their trail and I promise Nigerians that the matter will be investigated to the last. Until everybody is brought to book, we will not rest."

The Nigerian police said it had made one arrest in connection with the attacks and declared two other men -- named as Chima Orlu and Ben Jessy -- wanted, saying they were suspected to be the "masterminds" of the plot.

Nigeria's secret service has said it received foreign tip-offs ahead of the attacks and had stepped up security accordingly, including towing 65 vehicles from the streets and cordoning off roads leading to the parade ground.

Jonathan said on Saturday those responsible had used the MEND name to "camouflage criminality and terrorism."

SENIOR MILITANT ARRESTED

Henry Okah, a senior MEND figure, was arrested in South Africa on Saturday under counter-terrorism laws and was due to appear in court in Johannesburg on Monday, his lawyer said.

"The warrant of arrest alleges that he contravened the Protection of Constitutional Democracy Against Terrorist and Related Activities Act ... He totally denies any wrongdoing anywhere," Okah's lawyer Piet du Plessis told Reuters.

Security experts believe Okah -- who accepted a government amnesty last year after gun-running and treason charges against him were dropped -- was at one time the brains behind MEND, although he has denied ever being its leader.

Jonathan's special adviser on the Niger Delta, Timi Alaibe, was quoted on Sunday as saying MEND's leaders were cooperating with the government and that Okah was using the group's name.

"Everyone in the structure knows Jomo Gbomo is Henry Okah. There is no MEND sitting anywhere in any camp. It's all Henry Okah, through and through," he was quoted as saying by the This Day newspaper.

MEND carried out attacks on oilfields and pipelines in the Niger Delta, home to Africa's biggest oil and gas industry, for years until accepting an amnesty in 2009.

It has said it is fighting for a fairer share of the natural wealth for the vast wetlands region, whose villages remain mired in poverty despite five decades of crude oil extraction.

But MEND has always been a nebulous organization and the line between militancy and criminality has long been blurred.

Many of the gangs that carried out attacks in the group's name were originally set up as sabotage squads to help rig elections, rights groups and security analysts say.

They went on to thrive on a lucrative trade in stolen oil and on kidnapping for ransom and effectively work as guns-for-hire, security experts say.

Jonathan inherited the presidency this year after the death of President Umaru Yar'Adua. One of his main achievements while serving as Yar'Adua's deputy had been helping to cement the amnesty deal in the Niger Delta.

He faces an election next year and some analysts have questioned whether the Abuja bombs were intended to undermine his credibility by showing the Niger Delta issue is unresolved.

"(The bombing) has nothing to do with the amnesty, but it has everything to do with politics," Jonathan advisor Alaibe said.

South African Authorities Arrest Henry Okah over Independence Bomb Blast

Henry Okah, leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) fingered by Nigeria ’s Presidency to have been responsible for the Abuja Bomb Blast has been re-arrested in South Africa by the police.

Okah was arrested after Huhuonline.com revealed that the Presidency had fingered Henry Okah & South Africa as been responsible for the Abuja bomb explosions that killed at least 16 innocent people on October 1 while the nation was celebrating its 50th independence anniversary.

Huhuonline.com learnt from good authority that he has been re-arrested after an alleged threat by Nigerian government to severe diplomatic ties with South Africa and possible reprisal attacks by angry Nigerians who reviled the ugly incident.Authorities in thegovernment of South Africa says Henry Okah is expected to cooperate with security agencies by giving them more useful information on the bomb attack. Mr. Okah may likely be arraigned on monday on terrorism charges.

Tompolo, ex-MEND Commander, others condemn Nigeria’s October 1 bomb attack

As Nigerians continue to react to the October 1, 2010 bomb last in Abuja , ex-militants have joined in condemning the incident which claimed lives of innocent citizens. Former Niger Delta warlord and ‘Ex-Grand Commanding Officer’ (GOC) of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Chief Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo) has condemned the bomb explosion at the event, celebrating the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

An aide to the ex-militant warlord, Paul Bebenimibo condemned the attack in strong terms, saying that the dastardly act does not form part of the oil and gas wealthy Niger Delta struggle and distanced ex-militants in the region from the attack. “Those who carried out the bomb attack are cowards who want to paint the region in bad light and discredit Jonathan’s presidency. It a barbaric act and not part of the Niger Delta struggle”.

While charging security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act and bring them to justice so as to serve as deterrent to others, Ekpemupolo, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to remain undeterred by the antics of enemies of the nation who want to distract him from given purposeful leadership.

Similarly, ‘Ex- Commander’ of the Deadly Underdogs, ‘General’ Ezekiel Akpesibewie has said although he was not sure of the group which had carried out the attack revealed that there are split groups within the rank of outlawed MEND but could not say which faction claimed to have responsibility in the bombing of the venue of the anniversary ceremony.

‘General’ Akpesibewie also condemned the bomb blast attack and asked security agencies to do a through investigation into the vicious act.

Recall that the militant group in the Niger Delta, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) had on Friday issued a threat stating its intent to detonate bombs at the event. Henry Okah, whose house was first raided September 30 in South Africa , controls a faction of the group which said it has no confidence in the Federal Government amnesty programme while Tompolo controls another faction loyal to the amnesty programme.

A former militant who spoke on grounds of anonymity has reasoned that ex-militants in theNiger Delta may after all not be responsible for the attack as he said Okah had told him personally that he was no responsible for the attack even as another source said the bomb attack may have been carried out alleging by ‘Arewa boys’.

An eyewitness had earlier alleged that he saw two Arab men on a power bike set off the bombs.

MEND’s Denial

MEND, said that it intended to bomb the event in an electronic release issued by its spokesman, Jomo Gbomo. The source explained that MEND had never involved Arabs in its struggle in the Niger Delta and should not have contacted them to bomb the event celebrating the nation’s anniversary.

The militant group, which demanded a fairer distribution of the nation’s natural resources derivable from the oil-rich but strife-torn Niger Delta says there was “nothing worth celebrating after 50 years of failure”.

The incident which is similar to a car bomb allegedly by MEND at a Niger Delta stakeholders meeting early this year in Warri ha caused worry as to who is actually responsible for the attack.

South African police had invaded the Johannesburg home of Henry Okah, leader of theMovement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) early on Friday, apparently acting on the request of the Nigerian authorities who claimed that Mr. Okah was stockpiling weapons and re-arming fighters in the volatile Niger Delta region of Nigeria .

In 2008, Mr. Okah, who had been living in South Africa , was arrested in Angola by the Angolan authorities for alleged gun running.

He was deported to Nigeria where he was held in solitary confinement and secretly tried before a Federal High Court in Jos, charged with 62 counts of terrorism, illegal possession of weapons and treason amongst other capital crimes.

But in 2009, the government entered into an amnesty deal with his group and several

other Niger Delta militant groups and released him.

Okah returned to live in South Africa except for a brief trip to Nigeria to attend a meeting with the late Nigerian leader, Umaru Yar'adua during the Amnesty process.

The Federal Government had described as wicked and criminal, the twin bomb blasts that claimed the lives of over 10 persons and injuring scores of others. The first bomb explosion, at the Eagle Square , occurred minutes after President Goodluck Jonathan reviewed themilitary parade mounted by a combined detachment of troops, in the armed forces and police.

The explosion was detonated about 40 meters from the state box, where President Jonathan, Vice President Nnamdi Sambo and other visiting heads of government were sitting, at the Eagle Square , venue of the 50th anniversary celebration. The dead were evacuated to different morgues within the city while the injured were taken to the different hospitals for treatment.

It is clear that the intention of the perpetrators of the evil act was to truncate Nigeria ’s celebration of half a century of her political freedom.

“Their motive was to cut short the joy of men and women of goodwill and to pour shame and contempt on our President and indeed the entire nation, in the very presence of dignitaries and eminent persons from around the world. “Certainly, these operators of an evil enterprise had targeted to commit mass murder of innocent children, young and old men and women, and members of the international community who had gathered to partake in our nation’s glorious moment.

Abuja Bomb Blast: Chima Orlu (Wanted)

“To the glory of God, their act of wickedness was frustrated by the tight security put in place at the Eagle Square .

Police investigation has commenced in earnest. As soon as the forensic examination is over, the vehicles will be released to their owners and the roads re-opened to normal traffic.

“The Nigeria Police regrets the inconveniences caused owners of those trapped vehicles and the users of those roads.

“Also, an arrest has been made by the Police in connection with the incident. Police detectives are currently hunting for another two Nigerian citizens suspected to be the masterminds of the evil plot. Their names are: 1. CHIMA ORLU, (MALE) and 2. BEN JESSY (MALE) And I have attached their photographs for easier identification.

By this release, they are declared wanted by the Nigeria Police, and are hereby requested to come forward and clear their names. Any person who sees them or knows their whereabouts is requested to kindly report to the nearest Police Station anywhere in the Federation of Nigeria, or abroad, or call or send SMS to the following telephone numbers:1. 08033225-349; 2. 0806-2700-000 ; and 3. 0803-8305-707

“Finally, I wish to call on all citizens that the thought and act of bombing any part of this country amounts to a declaration of war against Nigeria . It is our collective duty to stop criminals from destroying our fatherland.

“All citizens are reminded that they are obliged by the constitution to assist law enforcement agencies in the maintenance of law and order. And it is indeed a punishable offence to conceal or hide the identity or whereabouts of a wanted person.”

Taxi Driver Who Hit Jonathan’s Car Charged For Attempted Murder

A taxi driver who rammed into the car conveying President Goodluck Jonathan on his official duty may have experienced hell on earth, in the hands of law enforcement officers who detained him for several months and charged him to court for what they termed attempted murder.

Mr. Ameh Onyeke, a taxi driver within the FCT, was dragged to a Gwagwalada court for alleged dangerous driving and attempted murder of the president. The case was filed at Court 11 Gwagwalada. Although hearing was scheduled for last Thursday, it didn't hold as the prosecutor was absent.

According to the counsel to Mr Ameh Barr. Ayam Michael, Ameh was arrested after the incident and was beaten black and blue by security agents in Mr. President's convoy around February this year, when his vehicle rammed into the President's car along area 11, Garki. He was promptly clamped into detention, where he was said to have spent over three months. Though he was granted bail after three months, since then, the case is yet to proceed in the court.

According to the defense counsel to the accused, who spoke to Leadership Sunday exclusively, the prosecutor, Barr Taiwo Malik ,attached to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) only attended the court once, which was when he filed the case according to section 129 of the criminal code and have not been seen again.

Barr Ayam further informed that, he had moved a motion for his client's vehicle to be returned to him since his client has no plans of killing Mr. President as alleged. In his words, "there is nothing about the boy killing the President. Rather, it is as a result of security lapses on the side of Mr. President's security agents, who were supposed to be at alert to forestall any harm possible of befalling the President. Therefore, if the car of a poor taxi driver could ram into the president's car, then there is no security in this country,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ameh Onyeke is yet to be given back his car which was confiscated by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) since January.

When contacted, media spokesman for president Jonathan, Mr. Ima Niboro said he was not aware of the incident.

In a statement signed by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Adesegun Ogunlewe, made available to newsmen, the appointment of Bello is with immediate effect.

The plight of the former embattled LASAA boss started when a group operating under the platform of “Majekobaje Eko Integrity Group” petitioned the Lagos State House of Asssembly on fraud allegedly perpetrated by the sacked managing director.

The petition, which was signed by Olajide O.O. and Akanbi K, was read on the floor of the House by the Clerk of the House, Taiwo Olatunji alleging that the LASAA MD paid N1.2 million every two weeks as hotel expenses for one Miss Nike Adekanbi, his wife’s younger sister, whom he employed as a consultant on human resources.

The group in the same petition alleged that LASAA realized over N100 million from mobile advert in 2009 “but Alabi claims the agency did not realize any money. The receipts issued to companies that made payments are available and have been sent to the appropriate government agencies.

“Our investigation has also revealed that Mr. Alabi acquired two plots of land in Banana Island, in Ikoyi at the rate N300 million each, the survey of the plots was carried out by Lekan Osinibi and Bobby, his staff at Baruwa Architects, whose office is situated inside LASAA,
“In an attempt to falsify account records, Alabi has moved the audit unit to his office and no staff of the agency except his cohorts can go to the audit department in his office without his ,” the group alleged.
